Making
Radio > Get started
You don't have to have expensive
studio facilities in order to get started. Our research
identified a number of schools and other organisations which are
making quality radio programmes with portable recording and
editing equipment.
It is useful think in two phases:
- how are
you going to produce (make) the radio programmes and items?
- how are you going to broadcast or play them
out to an audience?
Production
facilities:
Much radio is done live in the studio, but much can also be done
as short pre-recorded items using basic equipment. We
identified three main levels of radio production facilities in
schools and community centres, namely:
-
dedicated
permanent studios, suitable for radio production and for
a radio station, for example at Preston
Manor City Learning Centre
-
use of
temporary or shared studios, either hired for a radio
event/RSL or in a separate building or establishment, for
example at Hazelwood Infants
School or Riverside FM
-
no
studios, but use of recording and editing equipment,
either as portable kits (eg. a mini disk recorder,
microphone and laptop), or as networked editing/mixing
software, for example in the music or ICT suite, etc, for
example at Dore Primary School
Broadcasting and playing out:
A conventional
radio station on FM or AM is just one of the ways in which
schools and other organisations are making their radio
productions available to an audience. Our research identified
four main models of transmission, namely:

playing out to their audience.
