On air - licensed stations
There is very little programming
broadcast specifically for children on UK radio. The new
digital channels are bringing more opportunities - for example, BBC7
(national station launched in 2002) and Fun Radio (which
replaced Abracadabra on the London 3 digital multiplex in April
2005). However, until
digital radio becomes more widespread, the output actually
available for children remains small. On the positive
side, a children's radio station run by children (Takeover
Radio) was one of the community stations
originally licensed as part
of the Access
Radio Pilot Scheme set up by the regulator (then the Radio
Authority, now Ofcom).
Radio
programmes for
primary schools continue to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3
during term-times - overnight, for teachers to tape - and on
cassette.
